ERP vs TMS: where the ERP stops and logistics begins.

The ERP knows what was ordered, invoiced and dispatched. It rarely knows where the truck is, why it is late, or whose fault it was.

How to connect them

  1. Let the ERP stay the source for orders, invoices and dispatch.
  2. Feed the dispatch sheet into the TMS or control tower daily, validated before it is written.
  3. Send settlement and claims back to the ERP for accounting.
  4. Never maintain the same trip in two places.

Read ERP dispatch integration. SCM for Manufacturers reads the ERP dispatch sheet as its starting record and does not replace the ERP.

Questions

Do I need a TMS if I have SAP or another ERP?

Usually, for what happens after dispatch: placement, gate, tracking, delay ownership, carrier scores and claims. The ERP remains the source for orders and invoices.

Will a TMS create double entry?

Not if it reads the ERP’s dispatch data and sends settlement back, so each fact lives in one place.

See it on your own data. SCM for Manufacturers puts the plant gate, carriers, RDC stock, cold chain and OTIF on one control tower. Book a 30-minute working session with an engineer.
