• Track the Trip, Not the Truck: A Shipper’s ViewVehicle GPS was built for fleet owners, but shippers mostly hire trucks they do not own. We argue the unit of tracking should be the trip: a device assigned at the gate, a live record of one consignment, and a device collected at arrival, with fixed GPS and SIM feeds on the same trip.
• Your Customer Should Not Have to Call for an ETAStatus calls pass through sales, dispatch and the driver, and the answer gets worse at each step. We argue customers should get a no-login tracking link with an honest ETA based on actual speed, while the desk keeps the exceptions and acts on them first.

• Portable GPS Tracker for Hired Trucks: How It WorksA portable GPS tracker is a battery-powered device placed in a truck’s cab for one trip. It is linked to the trip, not the truck, reports position every few minutes and is collected at arrival for the next trip, which makes hired and market vehicles visible without fitting hardware to each one.
• How to Track a Hired Truck’s Live LocationTo track a hired truck, place a portable GPS device in the cab for the trip, use the carrier’s own GPS feed where it is shared, or fall back on consent-based SIM location. Create the trip at the gate, share a link with the customer and watch only exceptions, so status calls to drivers stop.
• Cold Chain Temperature Tracking in TransitCold chain temperature tracking in transit reads a load’s temperature and humidity while the truck is moving and alerts when it leaves the band set for the shipment type, such as 2–8 °C for many chilled loads. Unlike a logger read at delivery, it gives the desk time to act before the customer rejects the load.

• Portable GPS Device Requirement CalculatorDevices needed = tracked dispatches per day × (average transit days + days to collect, return and recharge), plus a spare buffer. This free calculator shows the cycle time per device, devices in use at any time and the stock to hold, so recollection time is visible as the main lever.

• Playbooks

• GPS Tracker Device Recollection: A PlaybookPortable GPS trackers get lost when nobody owns them at the destination. Keep an inventory by branch, link each device to a trip, queue it for collection as soon as the trip closes, name an owner at each destination, chase silent devices the same day, and use single-use devices on one-way lanes.

• Comparisons

• Portable GPS vs Fixed GPS vs SIM TrackingFixed GPS suits your own fleet; portable GPS devices suit hired and market trucks because they belong to the trip, not the vehicle, and can carry temperature sensors; consent-based SIM location is a less precise fallback when no device is available. Most shippers use all three on one trip record.
