Guide · Quality

Quality holds in steelmaking: how to decide faster, and with the cost in view.

A hold found after the slab is cast leaves fewer options and a slipped order. A hold decided by phone leaves no record of why.

A quality hold stops material from moving to the next stage, or to a customer, until someone decides what to do with it. In steel, holds are raised for chemistry outside the grade’s range, process deviations, test failures or surface defects.

The usual disposition options

OptionWhen it is possibleWhat it costs
Re-treatBefore casting, while chemistry can still be adjustedTime, additions, energy, possible sequence disruption
RegradeWhen the heat meets another grade’s rangePrice difference; the original order still needs steel
Divert to another orderWhen another open order accepts the gradePlanning effort; the original order may slip
Release with concessionWhen the customer agreesCommercial terms
Downgrade or scrapWhen nothing else fitsThe highest cost

How to decide faster

  1. Catch the hold as early as possible: check chemistry and process against the grade at each stage, not only at final inspection.
  2. Show the options with the cost of each against the order the heat was meant for.
  3. Look at similar past heats and what worked.
  4. Decide in the shift and record the decision against the heat.
  5. Review holds by cause each week.

Learning from holds

A Pareto of holds and defects by cause, grade and route shows which few causes produce most holds, and where an earlier check would have helped. It needs the hold and its decision linked to the heat genealogy.

How Steel Twin does it

Steel Twin is a digital-twin control room for integrated steel plants. It joins PLC and SCADA, the historian, MES, LIMS, ERP, EAM and energy data on heat_id, so every heat is traced from charge to coil with its grade, sales order, route and chemistry. Every event keeps its source timestamp and a quality flag, so stale data is never hidden. Holds arrive with re-treat or regrade options priced against the order they affect and similar past heats; holds, sequence risks and energy variances against norm are pushed to the shift controller, and one tap logs the decision to the genealogy. A single action queue is ranked by cost and urgency, and any shift can be replayed with its sources. Delivery starts with steelmaking and casting on one shop, then adds energy, asset health, iron-making, mills and dispatch on the same record.

Questions

What is a quality hold in a steel plant?

A stop on material moving to the next stage or to a customer until a decision is made, raised for chemistry outside range, process deviations, test failures or defects.

What are the options for an off-grade heat?

Re-treat while chemistry can still be adjusted, regrade, divert to another order, release with customer concession, or downgrade or scrap.

How can steel holds be decided faster?

Catch them earlier, show each option’s cost against the affected order, look at similar past heats, and record the decision in the shift.
