Distributor stock meaning
Distributor stock is a brand's product in a distributor's godown, bought but not yet sold to retailers. Learn how it is calculated and why counts go wrong.

Distributor stock is a brand's product in a distributor's godown, bought but not yet sold to retailers. Learn how it is calculated and why counts go wrong.
When a brand bills goods to its distributor, the brand records a sale, but the product has not reached a shopper. It sits in the distributor's godown until the distributor dispatches it to retailers. That stock is distributor stock, and across all distributors it forms most of the brand's channel inventory. Because the distributor has usually paid for it or owes for it, too much stock ties up the distributor's money, and too little means outlets go without.
The basic stock equation is the same in every trade:
Closing stock = opening stock + receipts from the brand - dispatches to outlets ± corrections
Receipts are the brand's primary sales to that distributor. Dispatches are the distributor's secondary sales. Corrections cover leaks, breakage, expiry, returns from retailers and counter sales that were never recorded as dispatches. Brands also track days of stock, which is closing stock divided by average daily dispatches, to judge whether a distributor is over-stocked or running short.
Illustrative figures only. For one SKU, a distributor starts the week with 120 cartons and receives 300 cartons from the brand. Outlets are dispatched 340 cartons, and 4 cartons are found leaking.
| Line | Cartons |
|---|---|
| Opening stock | 120 |
| Add: received from brand | 300 |
| Less: dispatched to outlets | 340 |
| Less: damaged, with reason | 4 |
| Closing stock | 76 |
If the distributor dispatches about 50 cartons a day of this SKU, 76 cartons is roughly a day and a half of cover, so a reorder is due now rather than at month-end.
Treating a correction as a failure makes distributors hide it, which is worse. Our post on why stock corrections are not a distributor's failure argues for recording them with a reason instead. In a WhatsApp distributor management system for FMCG brands such as Autowhat's, stock in hand is kept from approved gate pass quantities minus dispatches, with each correction reported with a reason and kept in the audit trail, so head office and the distributor see the same number.

Distributor stock is a brand's product held in a distributor's godown that has been received from the brand but not yet sold to retailers. It is part of the brand's channel inventory.
Take opening stock, add goods received from the brand, subtract dispatches to retailers, then adjust for damages, returns and expiry. Doing this per SKU gives a usable figure for reordering.
It depends on the category, shelf life, supply lead time and order frequency. Brands usually set a target range in days of stock per SKU and review distributors who sit well above or below it.
