A Socratic AI tutor: an assistant that asks instead of answering.

Most AI chatbots hand over the answer. A Socratic tutor asks the next question, so the student does the thinking.

A Socratic AI tutor guides a student with questions and hints rather than giving the answer. It checks the student’s reasoning at each step and only moves on when the student can explain it.

What a Socratic tutor should and should not do

ShouldShould not
Ask what the student thinks the next step isWrite the answer to a graded assignment
Give a hint when the student is stuckDo the arithmetic in its head
Show every calculation through a visible toolInvent a rate or a figure
Remember what this student usually confusesKeep a hidden profile the student cannot see
Reply in the student’s languageAsk for ID numbers or OTPs

What it looks like for a commerce topic

  1. The lesson starts from a real case, such as a shop’s day book for one week.
  2. The student is asked to record a transaction and say why.
  3. If the entry is wrong, the tutor asks a question that exposes the mistake, rather than correcting it.
  4. Totals and taxes are worked out with a calculator or rate table the student can see.
  5. The student explains the whole case back; the tutor asks until the reasoning holds.
  6. The confusion is remembered and comes back in a short revision before the test.

What faculty need from it

A view of the cohort: who is progressing, which topics most students are stuck on, and rules that keep graded work the student’s own. See the comparison with answer chatbots, and the checklist for AI and academic integrity.

How Teach-Back does it

Teach-Back is a personalised AI learning portal for commerce and finance students at colleges, universities and training institutes. Each student’s course, semester, language and goals produce a syllabus-aligned plan that is frozen once set, while the journey through it adapts to their pace. Lessons are built on real cases, such as a café’s GST, a shop’s day book or a bank statement. In the teach-back studio the student explains the topic and a Socratic assistant asks, hints and checks until the reasoning holds; it coaches graded work and never does it. Every number comes from a visible tool call to calculators or rate tables, not mental arithmetic. The assistant remembers what each student mixes up, in a memory the student can see, edit and wipe, and schedules short revisions on the phone. Faculty see cohort progress, a gap heatmap, assignments and integrity rules.
