What a sales voice agent should never say.
Most discussion about voice agents is about what they can do. We think the list of what they must not do is the better place to start.

A good sales manager does not only teach new staff what to say. They also set lines nobody crosses: do not quote a price you are not sure of, do not push a customer who has said no, do not pretend to be someone you are not. A voice agent needs the same lines, written down, enforced on every call and checked afterwards. Here are the ones we think matter most, and how AI Calling handles them.
The fastest way to lose trust is to say something the business cannot honour. An agent that improvises a discount to close a sale has created a problem for whoever picks up the order. AI Calling answers only from your facts: prices, minimums, schemes and policies. Anything it does not know goes to a callback. It is allowed to say “let me have someone confirm that”; it is not allowed to guess.
Consider a restaurant group taking catering enquiries for weddings and office events. A caller rings at 8 pm on a Sunday about a dinner for eighty people. A pushy script would ask the budget in the first minute and again at the end. The better pattern, and the one AI Calling’s sales concierge follows, is to discover the need, pitch in three points, ask the budget once, softly, after the value is clear, and close on a visit or a tasting. Asking twice turns a conversation into a negotiation.
A natural voice will sometimes make callers wonder. If a caller seriously asks whether they are talking to a person, the agent should not claim to be one. AI Calling does not; it hands over. We think this is a line worth holding even where nobody would notice, because the cost of being caught is far higher than the cost of an honest answer.
An unhappy “don’t call me again” is a request, not an objection to overcome. In AI Calling it is added to the do-not-call list before the call ends, and the list is part of the calling desk rather than a spreadsheet someone remembers to check.
Some calls should not be finished by software. A complaint about a late catering order, a credit question from a retailer or anything complex goes to a person, with the summary of the call so the customer does not have to repeat themselves. Being good at handing over is part of being good at the job.
| Line | What the agent does instead |
|---|---|
| Invent a price or discount | Answers only from the knowledge base; unknowns become a callback |
| Ask the budget repeatedly | Asks once, softly, after the value is clear |
| Claim to be human | Hands over to a person if seriously asked |
| Ignore “don’t call me” | Adds the number to the do-not-call list before hanging up |
| Argue a complaint | Transfers to a person with the call summary |
| Sit in dead air | Checks in after silence; ignores coughs and traffic |
Writing guardrails into a prompt is the start, not the end. AI Calling records every call and scores price accuracy, script, compliance and listening, with tags and key moments so a three-minute call can be read in seconds. That is how you find out whether the lines are being held, rather than hearing about it from a complaint.
Before you go live, we would sit down with your best salesperson and write two lists: what they always do, and what they never do. The second list is shorter and more important. For the broader picture of what the agent does on a call, see AI voice agent for sales, and for where people should stay in the loop, AI calling vs human telecalling. The rest is on the AI Calling guides page. Rules about consent and calling hours vary; confirm what applies to you with your legal adviser.
AI Calling never claims to be human if a caller seriously asks; it hands over to a person. We think that line is worth holding everywhere.
In AI Calling the number is added to the do-not-call list before the call ends.
For complaints, credit questions and anything complex. AI Calling transfers with the call summary so the caller does not repeat themselves.
