Proof of delivery (POD) meaning
POD means proof of delivery: the signed, stamped evidence that goods reached the consignee. See what a valid POD needs in India and why late PODs delay billing.

POD means proof of delivery: the signed, stamped evidence that goods reached the consignee. See what a valid POD needs in India and why late PODs delay billing.
When a truck unloads, the consignee's store or warehouse signs and stamps a copy of the lorry receipt (LR, bilty or consignment note) and writes the date. That copy is the POD. It travels back with the driver or, more often today, as a photograph on WhatsApp, and the original follows by courier when the customer insists on it. Many shippers will not accept a freight bill unless the POD is attached.
A POD missing any one of these is the most common reason a freight bill comes back. Remarks matter just as much: a "2 cartons damaged" note on the POD is the start of a damage claim, and its absence makes a later claim hard to argue.
Illustrative numbers only. A transporter delivers 40 loads in a month at an average freight of ₹35,000. The customer pays 30 days after receiving the bill with POD.
| POD reaches office | Bill raised | Cash received |
|---|---|---|
| Same day as delivery | Day 1 | About day 31 |
| 12 days after delivery | Day 13 | About day 43 |
Twelve days of POD delay on ₹14 lakh of monthly freight means ₹14 lakh sits uncollected for twelve extra days, every month, while diesel and driver advances are already paid.
Good bilty and LR software treats the POD as the event that unblocks billing: in SCM for Transporter the driver sends the POD photo on WhatsApp, OCR reads the LR number, stamp, signature and date, and the bill for that LR can be raised. For chasing the ones that never arrive, see POD pending: getting billed faster, and for the paper itself, lorry receipt vs consignment note vs bilty.

POD stands for proof of delivery. In Indian road transport it is usually the consignee's stamped and signed copy of the lorry receipt, sent back to the transporter as evidence the goods were delivered.
Most customers accept a clear photo showing the LR number, stamp, signature and date for billing. Some contracts still ask for the original hard copy, so check the customer's terms before relying on photos alone.
An authorised person at the consignee, such as the store keeper or receiving clerk, signs and stamps the POD. A signature without a stamp or date is often rejected by the shipper's accounts team.
