RRN stands for Retrieval Reference Number, the reference that follows a UPI or card transaction across systems. Learn where to find it and how banks use it.
When a card or UPI payment is initiated, the transaction is given a reference that every party along the route records: the payer's app and bank, the switch, the network and the payee's bank. Because the same number appears in each system's records, it becomes the common key for finding the transaction later. In card messaging the retrieval reference number is a standard field in the authorisation message; in UPI it appears in the transaction details that apps and bank statements show.
In most UPI apps, open the transaction in history and look for "UPI Ref No", "UPI reference" or "RRN". On a bank statement it often appears inside the narration of the UPI entry. On a card charge slip it is usually printed as RRN or reference number. Customers are asked for it when they raise a complaint about a failed or pending payment.
A bank reconciling UPI has to match its own switch log, the network's settlement file and its core banking postings. RRN is usually the first matching key, with amount and date as checks.
Illustrative example of a three-way match:
| RRN (made up) | Switch | Network file | Core banking | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4101 ... 001 | Rs 500 success | Rs 500 | Rs 500 debit | Matched |
| 4101 ... 002 | Rs 1,200 success | Rs 1,200 | Missing | Break: customer not debited |
| 4101 ... 003 | Rs 300 failed | Not present | Rs 300 debit | Break: debit without success, refund due |
The second and third rows become breaks with owners, and the third is the kind customers complain about.
For banks and payment companies, UPI reconciliation software for banks such as AutoRecon matches switch, network and core files daily on rules you write and gives every break a reason, age and owner. See UPI reconciliation for banks and reconciliation break management for the process.

RRN stands for Retrieval Reference Number. In UPI it is the reference that identifies the transaction across the payer's bank, the network and the payee's bank, and many apps show it as the UPI reference number.
Open the payment in your UPI app's transaction history and look for UPI Ref No, UPI reference or RRN. It also often appears in the narration of the entry on your bank statement.
Not exactly. RRN is the reference used for card and UPI transactions, while UTR is mainly used for NEFT and RTGS. Some banks label UPI references as UTR on statements, which causes the confusion.
