Agentic AI meaning

Agentic AI means AI systems that take a goal, plan the steps and act across tools with limited supervision. How it differs from generative AI, and the risks.

Agentic AI vs generative AI: what is the difference?

Generative AI answers a prompt: write this email, summarise this PDF, draw this image. It stops when the output is produced. Agentic AI wraps a generative model in a loop with memory, tools and a goal. It decides what to do first, does it, looks at what happened and decides again, until the goal is met or it hits a limit set by people.

An individual AI agent is one such worker. "Agentic AI" is the broader design idea, and often means several agents handing work to each other.

What does agentic AI look like in practice?

Take B2B outreach. A non-agentic tool writes one cold email when a rep asks. An agentic workflow takes a lead list and a goal of booked meetings, then works through it: cleans and verifies the list, reads each prospect's website, drafts a personal email and WhatsApp message, sends within daily limits, watches for replies, answers simple questions, schedules follow-ups and hands interested leads to a salesperson. That is the shape of AI sales outreach software such as AutoGrow, where AI writes and answers but a person takes over the live conversation. The craft behind the writing step is covered in B2B cold email personalisation.

A worked example (illustrative)

Goal: meetings with 200 manufacturing companies in Pune. The system verifies addresses and drops 30 invalid ones, drafts 170 personal emails, sends them over several days, and gets 11 replies. Six ask simple questions it can answer from the brochure; five want a call, and those are handed to the sales head. Every number here is illustrative.

Questions

What is agentic AI in simple terms?

Agentic AI is AI that is given a goal rather than a single question, then plans the steps, uses tools such as email or a CRM, checks results and keeps going until the job is done or a person steps in.

What is the difference between an AI agent and agentic AI?

An AI agent is a single piece of software that acts on a task. Agentic AI is the broader approach of building goal-driven, multi-step systems, often made of several agents working together.

Is agentic AI fully autonomous?

It should not be in most business uses. Well-built systems keep people at checkpoints such as sending to new contacts, spending money or making commitments, and log every action for review.
