Bilty software: what it should do after the LR is printed.
Most bilty apps stop at printing the lorry receipt. The money and the penalties sit in what happens next: the e-way bill, the trip, the POD, the freight bill and the books.
A bilty (also called a lorry receipt, LR, GR or consignment note) is the document a road transporter issues when it takes goods from a consignor. Every transport office in India makes them, so "bilty software" is usually the first software a transporter buys. Printing a clean bilty is the easy part. The question is what the software does with it afterwards.
What every bilty software must do
Number and print the LR in your own format, branch-wise, with consignor, consignee, GSTIN, packages, weight, freight terms (paid, to-pay, to-be-billed) and the vehicle.
Check the GSTIN of both parties before the LR is saved, so the e-way bill and invoice do not bounce later.
Work on a phone, because LRs are often made at a godown or a party’s gate, not in the office.
Share the LR as a PDF or link on WhatsApp, which is how consignors and consignees actually receive it.
What separates good bilty software from a bilty printer
The expensive problems in a transport office come after the LR: an e-way bill that expires at a check-post, a POD that never reaches accounts, a freight bill raised a month late, and a driver hisab nobody can reconcile. Good software treats the bilty as the first record of a chain, not a standalone document.
Step after the LR
Bilty printer
Bilty software that runs the office
E-way bill
Typed again on the portal
Generated from the LR on NIC, Part-B and extension tracked
Trip
Separate register or Excel
Trip drafted from the LR, with advances and expenses
POD
Paper copy in a file
Photo on WhatsApp matched to the LR, billing unblocked
Freight bill
Made from memory at month-end
Drafted from delivered LRs, with GST
Accounts
Re-entered in Tally
Each document posts its own journal entry
A ten-point checklist before you buy
Can one LR draft the e-way bill, trip, freight bill and journal entry without retyping?
Does it talk to NIC directly for e-way bills, including Part-B updates and extensions?
Can drivers and staff ask for truck status, LR status or POD on WhatsApp?
Does it handle to-pay, paid and to-be-billed freight correctly in the ledger?
Can it run several branches and companies with separate numbering?
Is there a driver hisab: advances, fuel, FASTag, tolls and expenses per trip?
Can you see margin per lane after the empty return, not just revenue?
Does it export cleanly to Tally if your CA needs it?
Does every edit leave an audit trail?
Will someone set it up with your own LR format and data, not just send a login?
Free bilty software vs paid
Free bilty apps and downloadable bilty formats are fine for printing a few LRs a day. They usually stop at the document: no NIC e-way bill connection, no trip or driver hisab, no ledger, and data that lives on one phone or PC. Once a transporter runs several branches or hundreds of LRs a month, the cost of retyping and missed e-way bills is far higher than the subscription. Choose on the chain the LR starts, not on the price of printing it.
Bilty format: the fields to keep
Keep your own bilty format if customers know it, but make sure it carries the LR number and date, consignor and consignee with GSTIN, from and to, packages and weight, invoice number and value, vehicle number, freight terms and signatures. See the full field list in our LR guide.
How SCM for Transporter handles the bilty
SCM for Transporter starts every consignment as a bilty on the LR desk. From that one record it drafts the e-way bill on NIC, the trip and driver hisab, the POD check, the freight bill and the double-entry journal. Staff, drivers and customers can ask for a truck’s location, an LR’s status or a POD on WhatsApp, in English, Hindi, Marathi or Hinglish. Questions
Is bilty the same as a lorry receipt (LR)?
Yes. Bilty, lorry receipt (LR), goods receipt (GR) and consignment note are names for the same road-transport document: the transporter’s acknowledgement that it has received the goods for carriage.
Can bilty software generate the e-way bill?
Good bilty software can. It takes the consignor, consignee, GSTIN, HSN and vehicle from the LR and generates the e-way bill on the NIC portal, so the details are not typed twice.
Is there free bilty software?
Yes, several apps print bilties for free. They rarely include NIC e-way bill generation, trip and driver hisab or accounts, which is where most of the time and penalties are.
Can I make a bilty on my phone?
Yes, most modern bilty software works on a phone, and the bilty can be shared as a PDF or link on WhatsApp.
