When a customer opens an account with a regulated entity, that entity completes KYC as usual and then uploads the record to the registry. The RBI Master Direction on KYC names CERSAI as the registry and requires the record to be uploaded within ten days of starting an account-based relationship. The registry generates a KYC Identifier, often called the CKYC number or KIN, and the entity must pass it on to the customer.
The next time that customer approaches a different lender or insurer, the new entity can search the registry with the identifier and download the record. The Master Direction says the entity should not ask for documents again unless the customer's details have changed, the record is incomplete or outdated, a document's validity has lapsed, or the entity considers fresh documents necessary.
Illustrative example. A salaried customer who opened a savings account last year applies for a personal loan at an NBFC. She shares her KYC Identifier on the application. The NBFC downloads the record, sees that the address matches her current one and that the photo is clear, and moves straight to credit checks. A second applicant's record shows an old address, so the NBFC asks him for a fresh address document, completes KYC and sends the updated details back to the registry.
| Term | Who uses it | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| CKYC | Banks, NBFCs, insurers and other regulated financial entities | A full KYC record with identifier, uploaded by the entity that did the KYC |
| KRA | Securities market intermediaries under SEBI | KYC records for investors in the securities market |
| Aadhaar e-KYC | Entities permitted to authenticate with UIDAI | Identity and address returned at the moment of authentication, not a stored registry record |
A registry check is one step among several. In digital KYC on WhatsApp, PAN, CKYC and account-aggregator checks run where the lender allows them, documents are read on arrival, and anything missing is asked for in the same conversation. The KYC automation software checklist lists what to ask a vendor about registry access, and the periodic re-KYC guide covers keeping records current.
Registry procedures and timelines are set by RBI, CERSAI and the PML Rules; confirm current requirements on the official portal or with your compliance team.

CKYC stands for Central KYC Records Registry. It is operated by CERSAI and lets regulated financial entities store and retrieve customers' KYC records digitally, so customers need not submit the same documents repeatedly.
The entity that uploaded your KYC to the registry is required to communicate your KYC Identifier to you. You can ask your bank, NBFC, insurer or mutual fund intermediary for it if you did not receive it.
Yes, in specific cases. A lender may ask for fresh documents if your details have changed, the registry record is incomplete or outdated, a document has lapsed, or it considers verification necessary.
