Mid-day meal monitoring: what to check every day, and how to record it.
A meal-quality failure is usually discovered after children are served. Monitoring has to start in the kitchen, before cooking.

| When | What to check |
|---|---|
| Before cooking | Kitchen and utensils clean; cooks’ hygiene; storage area dry and covered |
| Ingredients | Quantities weighed against the number of children expected; nothing spoiled |
| Cooking | Drinking water safe; food covered; cooking area away from classrooms |
| Serving | Portion size; food tasted by a responsible adult before serving; served hot |
| After serving | Number of children served recorded; any complaints noted |
A short daily message to parents saying what was served builds trust and brings problems to light sooner. Use their language, and SMS or voice where smartphones are not common.
EduWatch is an education control tower for state and district education departments: one portal and one record for eight roles, from the minister and secretary to district and block officers, principals, teachers, students and parents, with 25 modules across classroom, kitchen, field and governance. The state view shows one delivery score with a health band for every district and a red list of decisions for today. District officers get a risk ranking of schools that combines complaints, attendance, meals and data gaps, with a field route that starts with the school that needs it most; block officers use a walk-and-tap app with checklist, GPS pin, photo evidence and offline sync. Teachers take attendance by voice and parents of absent learners get an SMS. Data stays in India, the government owns it, faces are matched on site, learner IDs are tokenised and every access is logged.
Kitchen and cook hygiene, storage, ingredient quantities against expected children, safe water, portion size, tasting before serving and the number of children served.
Record checks at the time with photographs, give each school a daily quality score, escalate serious failures the same day and compare scores across the block or district.
