SMA (Special Mention Account) meaning

SMA means special mention account, the RBI's early-warning class for overdue loans that are not yet NPAs. SMA-0, SMA-1 and SMA-2 explained with worked examples.

What are SMA-0, SMA-1 and SMA-2?

The RBI's 12 November 2021 clarification on prudential norms sets the bands as below. It also states that SMA classification applies to all loans, including retail loans, irrespective of the size of the lender's exposure.

ClassTerm loans: principal, interest or other amount overdueCash credit or overdraft: balance continuously above the lower of limit and drawing power
SMA-0Up to 30 daysNot used
SMA-1More than 30 and up to 60 daysMore than 30 and up to 60 days
SMA-2More than 60 and up to 90 daysMore than 60 and up to 90 days

For NBFCs, the circular says the 90-day references for SMA-2 and NPA should be read as per the norms that apply to them, so confirm the current rules with your credit and compliance teams.

How does an account move into SMA?

Classification happens automatically in the lender's day-end process. The circular's example: a loan due on 31 March 2021 that stays unpaid becomes SMA-1 on 30 April, SMA-2 on 30 May and NPA on 29 June 2021. An account in SMA returns to the standard, non-overdue position when the overdue amount is cleared. Once it becomes an NPA, the circular requires all arrears of interest and principal to be paid before it can be upgraded to standard.

Worked example: a cash credit account

Illustrative numbers only. A trader has a cash credit limit of ₹50 lakh, but drawing power based on current stock is ₹40 lakh. The lower figure, ₹40 lakh, is the ceiling that matters. From 1 July the outstanding balance stays at ₹43 lakh and is never brought back to ₹40 lakh or below. After more than 30 days continuously above the ceiling, the account is SMA-1; after more than 60 days, SMA-2. Bringing the balance back within the lower of the limit and drawing power stops the count.

How is SMA different from NPA?

Most SMA-0 accounts cure with a timely reminder and an easy way to pay. AutoCollect, WhatsApp EMI reminder and NBFC collection software, sends reminders and payment links on WhatsApp, records promise dates and re-queues broken promises, so collectors spend their time on accounts drifting towards SMA-2. To measure whether such changes work, see testing collections changes with a control group.

Questions

What is the full form of SMA in banking?

SMA stands for special mention account. It is the RBI classification for loans that are overdue but not yet non-performing, split into SMA-0, SMA-1 and SMA-2 by how long the amount has been overdue.

Is SMA-0 bad for my credit score?

An SMA-0 account is overdue, and lenders report repayment status to credit bureaus, so late payment can show on your credit history. Paying the overdue amount promptly stops the account moving into SMA-1.

How does a loan come out of SMA status?

A loan leaves SMA when the full overdue amount is paid, or for cash credit when the balance returns within the drawing power or limit. Once an account becomes NPA, all arrears must be cleared before upgrade.
