NPA is short for Non-Performing Asset. RBI's master circular on income recognition and asset classification says a term loan becomes an NPA when interest or an instalment of principal remains overdue for more than 90 days. Before that line, stressed accounts are flagged as Special Mention Accounts: SMA-0 for up to 30 days overdue, SMA-1 for 31 to 60 days and SMA-2 for 61 to 90 days. Collections teams usually mirror these bands as internal buckets, and collections software by DPD bucket is built around one goal: curing accounts in SMA-1 and SMA-2 before they cross into NPA, because recovering an account after classification is slower and costlier.
The classification belongs to the borrower account, not to a single EMI. If one facility of a borrower turns NPA, the lender's other facilities to the same borrower are generally treated the same way, so check the master circular for how this applies to your book.
An NPA does not stay in one category. It ages, and each stage needs a higher provision under the RBI norms.
| Category | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Substandard | NPA for 12 months or less |
| Doubtful | Substandard for 12 months, full recovery now questionable |
| Loss | Identified as a loss by the lender, auditors or RBI inspection but not yet fully written off |
Illustrative numbers only. A borrower has an EMI of ₹8,000 due on the 10th of each month and misses the March, April and May instalments. The oldest unpaid instalment is 10 March, so days past due are counted from that date. At the day-end run on 8 June, 90 days after 10 March, the account is classified as an NPA. Until then it is SMA-2.
Now suppose the borrower pays one EMI of ₹8,000 on 15 June. The account is still an NPA. RBI's norms allow an NPA to be upgraded to standard only when the entire arrears of interest and principal are paid, so the borrower would need to clear all overdue instalments and any overdue interest, not just one month.
Bucket names around this line vary by lender. Our guide to delinquency bucket meaning maps common names to SMA and NPA, and collection strategy by DPD bucket covers what to do at each stage. For the exact rules on your portfolio, read the RBI master circular and confirm with your compliance team.

NPA stands for Non-Performing Asset. It is a loan or advance on which interest or principal has been overdue for more than 90 days under RBI's prudential norms, so it has stopped earning income for the lender.
Yes. Under RBI's norms an NPA can be upgraded to a standard asset once the borrower pays the entire arrears of interest and principal. Paying only one or two overdue EMIs is not enough.
SMA (Special Mention Account) flags early stress, from SMA-0 up to SMA-2 at 61 to 90 days overdue. Once dues cross 90 days overdue, the account is classified as an NPA and provisioning starts.
