Every month a loan book generates demand: the EMIs that fall due. Collection efficiency, often shortened to CE in Indian NBFC and microfinance reporting, compares what came in with that demand. It is the headline number on most monthly collections reviews and in lender investor updates. On its own, though, it says nothing about which borrowers paid or which bucket is slipping, which is why collections software by DPD bucket tracks cure and roll rates for each bucket alongside the overall CE figure.
There is no single regulatory formula. The two most common versions differ in what goes into the numerator.
| Version | Formula | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Current or billing CE | Collected against this month's demand ÷ this month's demand | How well new dues are paid on time |
| Total CE | All collections in the month, including arrears ÷ this month's demand | Cash brought in, including catch-up on old dues |
Some lenders also strip out prepayments and foreclosures, or report CE separately for each bucket. Whatever you pick, write the definition at the top of the MIS and keep it fixed.
Illustrative numbers only. A lender's demand for October is ₹50 lakh. Against that demand, ₹44 lakh is collected. Borrowers who were already overdue also pay ₹4 lakh of older arrears, and a few customers pay ₹1 lakh of November EMIs in advance.
The same month reads anywhere from 88% to 98% depending on the definition. If a report says CE is 98% without saying how, you cannot tell whether on-time payment is healthy or arrears recovery is masking a weak month.
To work out the numbers for your own month, use the collection efficiency calculator. To see how effort should differ by bucket, read collection strategy by DPD bucket.

Divide the amount collected in the period by the amount that fell due in the same period and multiply by 100. State whether arrears, advance EMIs and prepayments are included, because each choice changes the result.
When the numerator includes recovered arrears or advance payments, collections in the month can exceed that month's demand. It usually means old dues were caught up, not that every borrower paid on time.
Collection efficiency compares money collected with money due. Cure rate is the share of accounts in a delinquent bucket that return to current by the next cut-off. Read both together.
