UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) meaning

UDISE+ stands for Unified District Information System for Education Plus, the Ministry of Education's school database. See what it records and who checks it.

What is the full form of UDISE+?

UDISE+ stands for Unified District Information System for Education Plus. The Department of School Education & Literacy in the Ministry of Education developed it from the reference year 2018-19. Schools upload their data online with built-in validation checks, and officials verify it at block, district and state level. The Ministry describes the result as one national database for school education, and the yearly UDISE+ report on enrolment, teachers and infrastructure is built from it.

UDISE+ is a reporting system: it tells a department what each school says about itself, once a year. Checking what is happening in a school on a given day is a separate job. A school inspection app for education departments such as Autowhat's EduWatch gives block officers a walk-and-tap checklist with a GPS pin, photo evidence and offline sync, so what an officer finds on a visit is on record.

What data does UDISE+ record?

The Ministry notes that unique student and teacher records help remove duplicate or ghost entries and identify beneficiaries of schemes such as Samagra Shiksha and PM POSHAN, the national mid-day meal scheme.

Who fills and verifies UDISE+ data?

According to the UDISE+ report, responsibility for accuracy sits with nodal officers at each level: the head of the school, the Cluster Resource Officer, the Block Education Officer, the District Education Officer and the State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha. The UDISE+ code itself is allotted to a recognised school by the Central Government on the recommendation of the state or UT where the school is located.

How does a UDISE+ check work? A worked example

Illustrative only. A block has 120 schools in the system.

StepWhat happens
1. School entryA head teacher enters enrolment of 312, which is 40 lower than last year
2. VerificationAt cluster level, the officer compares the figure with last year and asks about the drop
3. Explanation25 students moved to a new school nearby and 15 are missing from the entry
4. CorrectionThe school adds the 15 students before district verification

Students who stop attending without moving are a different problem. The school dropout early warning playbook covers how to spot them during the year.
