A voice bot is software that talks to callers on the phone. Modern voice agents hold a real conversation and complete tasks. How they work and where they fail.
The terms are used loosely, but there is a real distinction. Older voice bots follow a fixed script: they listen for a few expected words and move through a decision tree. A voice agent, sometimes called an AI caller or AI calling agent, uses a language model held to the company's own knowledge, so it can follow a caller who answers out of order, switches language or asks something unexpected, and it can act, for example by writing an order or booking a visit. An AI voice agent for order calls is a typical case: it takes the order, not just a message.
| Scripted voice bot | AI voice agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | Fixed flow, expected phrases | Open, follows the caller |
| Knowledge | Whatever is in the script | Price list, policies, FAQs it is given |
| Actions | Usually routing or recording | Order, booking, transfer, opt-out |
| Failure mode | "Sorry, I did not understand" | Can invent answers if not constrained |
Each turn runs a loop: telephony carries the audio, speech-to-text turns the caller's words into text, the model decides what to say or do using the business's rules, a tool call carries out any action, and text-to-speech speaks the reply. The whole loop has to finish fast enough that the caller does not notice a gap. After the call, a good system saves the transcript, a summary and the outcome against the caller.
A sales rep is on leave, so the voice agent calls the 40 outlets on that rep's beat. At one kirana store the owner says, in Hinglish, that he wants two cartons of one SKU and six packets of another. The agent confirms the quantities, checks them against the minimum order, states the scheme that applies, and sends the order to the distributor before hanging up. When the next retailer raises a credit dispute, the agent does not argue; it transfers the call to a person with a summary. Outlet counts and items are illustrative.
Indian distribution makes this harder than it looks: calls mix Hindi, English and regional languages, and a quoted price has to match the price list to the paisa.

A voice agent is AI software that makes or answers phone calls, understands natural speech, replies in a synthetic voice and completes a task such as taking an order or booking an appointment, handing over to a person when needed.
No. An IVR plays a recorded menu and asks callers to press keys or say simple options. A voice bot or voice agent holds a conversation in natural language and can complete the request itself.
Many can, including mixed Hindi and English. Quality varies by language, accent and line quality, so test with real recordings from your own callers before relying on it for live calls.
