Hectolitre weight meaning

Hectolitre weight is the mass of 100 litres of grain in kg/hl. Learn how wheat test weight is measured, what it signals to a mill and how it differs from TKW.

How is hectolitre weight measured?

Nobody fills a 100-litre drum. Labs and mill gates use a test-weight apparatus, often called a chondrometer: a small container of fixed volume filled through a standard hopper so that grain falls the same way every time. The operator levels the top with a strike-off bar, weighs the contents and scales the result up to 100 litres. Because packing depends on how grain is poured, the same apparatus and method must be used every time for results to be comparable.

Why do millers and buyers care about it?

Plump, well-filled kernels pack tightly and carry more endosperm, the part that becomes flour. Shrivelled, immature, insect-damaged or chaffy grain leaves more air between kernels and reads lighter. So a low test weight is an early warning that the lot may give less flour per tonne, even before a detailed defect count. Moisture affects the reading too, which is why it should be recorded alongside.

In India, hectolitre weight usually appears in a flour mill's or exporter's own intake specification. It is not one of the FCI Fair Average Quality limits that GrainGrade's built-in rulepack checks, which cover foreign matter, other foodgrains, damaged, slightly damaged, shrivelled and broken grains, and moisture. Our guide to wheat quality parameters sets out what each of those checks means.

Worked example: two lots at the gate

Illustrative numbers only. A 1-litre test-weight container is filled from two lots and weighed.

LotMass in 1 litreHectolitre weight
Lot A0.780 kg0.780 × 100 = 78.0 kg/hl
Lot B0.725 kg0.725 × 100 = 72.5 kg/hl

If the mill's own spec sets a minimum between those two figures, Lot B goes for a closer look: a shrivelled and broken count, a moisture reading and a check for foreign matter. The test weight does not say why the lot is light; it says where to look.

Questions

What is the meaning of hectolitre weight of wheat?

It is the weight of wheat that would fill 100 litres, stated in kilograms per hectolitre. A higher figure usually means plumper, better-filled grain and a better likely flour yield.

What is a good hectolitre weight for wheat?

There is no single figure that applies everywhere. Each flour mill, exporter or contract sets its own minimum, so check the buyer's written intake specification rather than a number quoted informally at the mandi.

Is test weight the same as hectolitre weight?

Yes. Both describe the mass of a fixed volume of grain. Hectolitre weight uses kilograms per 100 litres, while some markets quote test weight in pounds per bushel.
