Weighbridge meaning

A weighbridge is a platform scale that weighs a whole truck. Learn how tare, gross and net weight work at Indian plant gates and why scale queues slow TAT.

How does a weighbridge work?

Load cells under a steel or concrete deck measure the force of the vehicle on it, and an indicator converts that to kilograms. The operator records the vehicle number, the reading, and whether this is the first or second weighment. In many Indian towns a public weighbridge is still called a dharam kanta, and transporters use it when the plant's own scale is disputed.

What are tare, gross and net weight?

For outbound dispatch the truck is weighed empty on arrival and loaded before gate-out. For inbound material such as coal, grain or scrap the order is reversed: loaded on arrival, empty after unloading.

Worked example: checking a dispatch

Illustrative numbers only.

ReadingWeight
First weighment (tare, empty truck)9,450 kg
Second weighment (gross, loaded)34,780 kg
Net weight of goods25,330 kg
Invoice quantity25,000 kg

The 330 kg difference has to be explained before the truck leaves: packaging and pallets not counted in the invoice, a wrong tare taken from an old slip, or genuinely extra material. If the plant's tolerance is tighter than the gap, the truck goes back to the dock.

Which rules apply to weighbridges in India?

A weighbridge used for trade is a weighing instrument under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, so it must be verified and stamped by the state Legal Metrology department and re-verified periodically. Separately, the Motor Vehicles Act limits how much a vehicle may carry, so the gross reading is also an overloading check. Confirm current verification intervals and permissible weights with the official Legal Metrology and transport department portals.

Common mistakes and confusions

A plant logistics control tower such as SCM for Manufacturers stamps eight timestamped gate stages per truck, from arrival outside the gate to POD, so a slow scale shows up as extra dwell between stages, by plant, shift and hour, instead of being hidden inside one average. See plant truck turnaround time for the stage-by-stage method and gate ANPR and RFID integration for capturing vehicle numbers without typing.

Questions

What is tare weight on a weighbridge slip?

Tare weight is the weight of the empty vehicle. Subtracting it from the gross weight, taken when the truck is loaded, gives the net weight of the goods carried on that trip.

Does a weighbridge need a government licence or stamp?

Yes. A weighbridge used for trade must be verified and stamped by the state Legal Metrology department and re-verified at set intervals. Check the current procedure on your state's Legal Metrology portal.

Why do two weighbridges show different weights for the same truck?

Differences come from calibration, a stale tare, fuel or water picked up on the way, or the truck not standing fully on the deck. Agree in advance which scale governs and what tolerance is acceptable.
