Stop judging B2B outreach by open rates.

Opens are the easiest number to see, so they become the number everyone discusses. We think the channel decision should rest on meetings and wins instead.

The Monday review that argues about the wrong number

In many sales reviews the outreach discussion goes like this. Email opens are up. WhatsApp read receipts look strong. Someone suggests doubling down on whichever is higher this week. Nobody can say which channel produced the two meetings booked last Thursday, because the meetings were logged in a spreadsheet on Friday and the messages live in Gmail and on reps’ phones.

The team is not lazy. It is measuring what it can see. And what it can see most easily is the top of the funnel.

Why opens and reads mislead

An open or a read tells you a message was displayed. It does not tell you it was understood, wanted or acted on. Some email clients load content automatically, which can register as an open nobody made. A WhatsApp message marked read may have been glanced at in a notification and forgotten. These numbers are useful for spotting broken things, such as a subject line that never gets opened. They are poor guides to where the next rupee should go.

The further down, the more it matters

Our view is simple: compare channels on the latest stage you have enough data for. If you have enough wins, compare wins. If not, compare meetings. If not even that, compare replies. Do not settle a channel argument with opens unless there is genuinely nothing else.

That rule only works if every stage is joined to the lead it belongs to. When the email lives in one tool, the WhatsApp thread on a phone and the deal in a spreadsheet, nobody can trace a win back to the message that started it. The measurement problem is really a data problem.

It is also worth comparing like with like. A channel that was given the warmest leads, such as marketplace enquiries from buyers who asked first, will look better than one given a cold list, whatever its real merit. Before declaring a winner, check that both channels worked on similar lists over the same weeks.

One record per lead

The fix is to put every send, delivery, read, open and reply on the same lead, alongside the stage it has reached. Then a sales head can ask a fair question, such as which channel produced more meetings from the same kind of list this month, and get an answer without a week of reconciliation. Equally, a rep can see the full history before calling, instead of asking the prospect to repeat themselves.

How AutoGrow does it

AutoGrow keeps email and WhatsApp on one record, with sent, delivered, read, opened and replied tracked on every lead, and stages from qualified to won in a live funnel. Email against WhatsApp is compared by reply, meeting and win, and the CEO dashboard shows pipeline value, campaigns, reply rate and the funnel live, so the Monday review starts from the same numbers.

For a channel comparison in principle, read cold email vs WhatsApp for B2B outreach; for the sequence that produces the replies, see the follow-up sequence playbook. More is in AutoGrow guides and tools.

One change for the next review

The conversation gets shorter, and it ends with a decision about money rather than a debate about percentages.

Questions

Are open rates a good measure of B2B outreach?

Not for deciding where to invest. Opens and reads show a message was displayed; replies, meetings and wins show it worked.

How should we compare email and WhatsApp outreach?

On the latest funnel stage with enough data, ideally meetings or wins, using the same period and similar lead lists.

Why is outreach hard to measure?

Because email, WhatsApp and the pipeline often live in separate tools, so a win cannot be traced back to the message that started it.
