ALCOA+ meaning

ALCOA+ is the set of data-integrity rules regulators expect of GxP records: attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original, accurate, plus four more.

What does ALCOA+ stand for?

LetterPrincipleIn a cold room log, it means
AAttributableEach reading and action is linked to a person or a named system
LLegibleAnyone can read it, now and at an inspection years later
CContemporaneousRecorded when it happened, not filled in later
OOriginalThe first record, or a verified true copy of it
AAccurateCorrect, with any change visible and justified
+CompleteNothing deleted, including failed or repeated readings
+ConsistentDates, times and sequence agree across records
+EnduringKept on a durable medium for the retention period
+AvailableCan be retrieved for review or inspection when asked

Some quality teams add Traceable and call the set ALCOA++. The wording varies slightly between guidance documents, but the intent is the same.

Where does ALCOA+ apply in India?

ALCOA+ applies to any record that supports a GxP decision: batch records, laboratory data, stability studies, distribution records and temperature logs for cold rooms and freezers. Indian manufacturers, testing labs, blood banks and pharma distributors meet it in inspections by Indian regulators and, for exporters, in audits against international guidance such as the WHO data integrity guideline. Check the exact expectations for your licence and markets with your QA and regulatory team.

What does ALCOA+ look like in practice? A worked example

Illustrative only. A cold room alarm fires at 02:10 when the temperature reaches 8.4 °C. An ALCOA+ record shows the sensor reading with its time stamp, the alarm, who acknowledged it at 02:18 and the comment they entered, the door left ajar after a late delivery, plus the return to 6 °C at 02:35. Compare a clipboard entry written at 08:00 saying "5.2 °C, OK" with a signature. The second record is neither contemporaneous nor complete: the excursion never appears in it.

What breaks ALCOA+ most often?

Our guide to what a GxP temperature monitoring system needs covers the controls in more depth, and the comparison of manual temperature logs vs continuous monitoring shows where paper falls short. A GxP temperature monitoring system such as Autowhat's ColdWatch keeps every reading, alarm and action in an append-only, time-stamped audit trail, requires a comment on every acknowledgement, and delivers IQ, OQ and PQ documents.

Questions

What is the full form of ALCOA?

ALCOA stands for Attributable, Legible, Contemporaneous, Original and Accurate. These are the five core principles of data integrity for records in regulated pharma and healthcare work.

What is the difference between ALCOA and ALCOA+?

ALCOA+ keeps the five ALCOA principles and adds four more: Complete, Consistent, Enduring and Available. The extra principles focus on keeping the full record intact and retrievable over time.

Does ALCOA+ apply to paper records?

Yes. ALCOA+ applies to paper and electronic records alike. A paper log must still show who wrote each entry, when, and any corrections must be visible, signed and justified rather than overwritten.
