Reefer means a refrigerated truck, trailer or container that holds cargo at a set temperature in transit. How reefers work in India and the mistakes to avoid.
A reefer has three parts that matter: an insulated body, a refrigeration unit and a controller. The unit blows cooled air into the box and draws warm air back; the controller compares that air with the set point and switches cooling or heating to hold it. Trucks usually run the unit from a dedicated engine or the vehicle itself, while reefer containers at ports, container freight stations and rail yards are plugged into mains power at reefer points.
The word is simply short for refrigerated. It is not an acronym, and in Indian logistics it is used for the vehicle, the container and sometimes the cooling unit alone.
Most shippers hire reefers from transporters rather than own them, so the temperature record has to travel with the trip, not stay inside the transporter's telematics account. Our guide to reefer temperature logger integration covers mapping each logger to a vehicle, trip and batch, and cold chain temperature tracking in transit explains how excursions are caught on the road.
Illustrative numbers only. A 2 to 8 °C consignment travels for 10 hours with a logger reading every 5 minutes. At the second drop, five consecutive readings show 9.1 to 9.6 °C while the door stays open during unloading. The excursion is 5 readings × 5 minutes = 25 minutes above 8 °C, with a peak of 9.6 °C. QA does not decide from the reefer display alone; it checks the product's stability data and its SOP, then releases, quarantines or rejects the batch and records why.
| Asset | Active cooling | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Reefer truck or container | Yes, own refrigeration unit | Holding a set temperature over long trips |
| Insulated van | No, relies on insulation, gel packs or dry ice | Short trips with passive shippers |
| Cold room | Yes, fixed plant | Storage at a site before and after transit |

Reefer has no full form. It is a short, informal word for refrigerated, used in logistics for a refrigerated truck, trailer or shipping container that keeps its cargo at a set temperature.
A reefer holds whatever set point the shipper specifies, such as 2 to 8 degrees Celsius for many medicines or well below zero for frozen food. The product label and the shipper's SOP decide the range, not the vehicle.
A reefer container has insulated walls and its own refrigeration unit that needs power, while a dry container is an unrefrigerated steel box. Dry containers suit goods that tolerate ambient temperature; reefers carry perishables and temperature-sensitive cargo.
