Insurance surveyor meaning

An insurance surveyor is an IRDAI-licensed professional who inspects a loss and reports its cause and value. See how a survey works and what it decides.

What does an insurance surveyor do?

When a car is damaged, a factory catches fire or a consignment arrives broken, the insurer needs an independent view of what happened and what it costs. That is the surveyor's job. A surveyor typically:

Surveyors are licensed by IRDAI under Section 64UM of the Insurance Act, 1938 and IRDAI's surveyor and loss assessor regulations. The law requires a licensed surveyor's report before an insurer settles claims above a specified amount, and IRDAI sets the licence categories, such as motor, fire, marine cargo and engineering. Check the current thresholds on the IRDAI website rather than relying on a figure quoted secondhand.

Surveyor vs investigator vs adjuster: what is the difference?

RoleMain question
Surveyor and loss assessorWhat was damaged, why, and how much is the loss?
InvestigatorIs the claim genuine, or are there signs of fraud?
Claims handler or adjuster at the insurerGiven the report and the policy, what do we pay?

The surveyor does not pay the claim and does not have the final word. The insurer can accept the report, ask questions or, in a disputed case, appoint another surveyor.

How does a motor survey work?

Illustrative example with simple numbers. A car's bumper and headlamp are damaged. The garage estimate is 40,000 rupees. The surveyor inspects the car, agrees the bumper is a replacement and the headlamp can be repaired, takes off 8,000 rupees as the policy's depreciation on plastic parts and 1,000 rupees as the compulsory deductible. The assessed amount is 40,000 minus 8,000 minus 1,000, or 31,000 rupees, which the insurer then approves. The figures here are made up to show the steps; real depreciation rates and deductibles come from the policy wording.

Delays usually sit around the survey: booking the visit, waiting for the report, and the customer not knowing either has happened. Claims triage software for insurers can book the surveyor as soon as a claim is triaged and push each step to the customer on WhatsApp. For how triage decides which claims go to fast track or investigation, see claims triage rules.

Questions

Who appoints the insurance surveyor?

The insurer usually appoints the surveyor after the claim is intimated. The surveyor should hold a valid IRDAI licence in the relevant category, such as motor, fire or marine cargo, and you can ask the insurer for the surveyor's details.

Is a surveyor needed for every motor claim?

Not always. A licensed surveyor's report is required above an amount specified under the Insurance Act, and smaller claims may be handled differently. Check the current threshold with IRDAI or your insurer.

Can I dispute a surveyor's report?

Yes. Raise it with the insurer's claims team and grievance cell with your evidence, such as repair bills and photos. If it stays unresolved, the Insurance Ombudsman is the next step.
